The prospect of losing weight usually conjures up images of Spartan diets filled with way too much leafy green stuff and not enough chocolate. Exercise, if it’s on the radar at all, is often just an afterthought. No wonder diets usually fail!
Some of the best exercises to lose weight are also the most fun. Imagine losing weight being a fun project!
Many people make exercise into chore or an endurance test. That’s one approach and it can indeed work: Get up and run for 30 minutes, brush your teeth, take a shower, iron your pants. In other words, make exercise part of a daily routine and don’t expect too much of it.
Another approach, one that is less of a chore, is to build structured activity into your day, week, and month that is both fun and hard to avoid at the same time. Make your exercise program something to look forward to and you’re more likely to stick with it long enough to see real results.
Here are some tips for incorporating the best exercises to lose weight into your life and keeping them there:

• Walk or bike to work or the grocery. Not more than 50 years ago, people walked everywhere. Shopping was located downtown, and parking was scarce, so if you needed to shop you hopped on a bus or a bike. Now most people take the car even for a half-mile run to the grocery store. In the U.S., the federal government will actually provide a tax break to anyone who bikes to work at least a couple of times every week. How can you go wrong with that?
• Sign up for a dance class. Dancing is fun and it’s incredibly strenuous. If you join a weekly or biweekly class with a friend you’re more likely to keep attending. A great side effect of taking a dance class is that dance has been shown to be as effective in treating mild depression as most antidepressant drugs.
• Join a community center or health club with a pool. Swimming is one of the best whole body exercises available. Because the water takes pressure off of joints swimming is low impact and easy on the body, yet it combines aerobic benefits with resistance benefits (from pushing again the weight of the water).
• Find a hiking partner. People who exercise with a partner are more likely to keep it up than people who exercise alone. Make friends and hike local parks and nature areas on the weekend. Walking over rough terrain and negotiating hills and inclines works different muscles than walking on a city sidewalk.
• Learn yoga. Westerners think exercise has to be brutal or it won’t work. The truth is that plunging into an extreme exercise routine when you’re out of shape is a great way to hurt yourself. Yoga can lead to significant weight loss. How? The practitioner learns correct breathing and posture, and the poses themselves are remarkably intense. Often simply becoming fully aware of your own body for the first time leads to a natural change that cause weight to vanish.
• Garden. Gardening is hard work. Spend a morning with a shovel and you’ll never question that statement again. The great thing about gardening is that in addition to giving anyone who wants to try it a great workout, it also creates a beautiful environment right in your own back yard. One warning: Gardening becomes addictive fairly quickly. Once you have one gardening success you’ll start to see lots of new possibilities for planting.
The best exercises to lose weight are exercises you keep doing because they make you feel great and you love to engage in them. Running is a great exercise, but if you hate to run, you can get benefits that are nearly as good from brisk walking, hiking, dancing, biking, and any number of other aerobic activities that are closer to recreation than work. Use your imagination, and most of all, enjoy!
