In a scene from the popular movie Fight Club, Edward Norton buries his head into the ample chest of the rock singer Meat Loaf in the context of a support group for men recovering from testicular cancer. Outside of that specific context (hugs, support groups, recovery, hormonal imbalances), it’s hard to imagine a situation in which man boobs are a desirable trait.
Most men don’t want them.
How do you lose man boobs? The answer is fairly straightforward: diet and exercise; but it has to be the right kind of exercise, the right kind of diet, and most men should run through a list of preliminary questions before getting started.
For example, have you talked with your doctor? Sometimes ‘man boobs’ are indeed a symptom of a hormonal imbalance or a disease process that needs to be addressed totally apart from any diet or exercise program.
Chronic marijuana use will also cause the development of breast tissue in some men, so if you smoke a lot of marijuana and are of otherwise normal weight and in good health, you might want to stop using that herb and see if that doesn’t fix the problem.
Once you’ve ruled out pathology or excessive drug use, you can safely assume that the way to lose man boobs is to change your diet and exercise regularly so as to build upper body muscle.
The most effective exercise routine to lose man boobs is a combination of cardio and resistance training. A training program that focuses on high intensity resistance exercises like Tom Venuto’s Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, or Craig Ballantyne’s Turbulence Training will accomplish both tasks at once and will also provide lots of good diet and nutrition advice.
If you don’t want to spring for a pre-designed routine like that, you can get similar results by committing to three hours per week of weight training with free weights that focuses on the upper body, and then combine that with a daily 30-45 minute brisk walk. The goal is to burn calories, but more importantly, to build upper body muscle while doing so.
When you build and tone the muscles in your chest, back, shoulders, and arms, the fat disappears and you also burn more calories while you are at rest. Muscle burns more calories than fat, and takes up less space.
Often, during the early phase of a bodybuilding regimen, inches will be lost while weight stays the same or even increases slightly. If your goal is to lose man boobs; increased upper body muscle is exactly what is needed.
Simply losing weight can sometimes also reduce or eliminate man boobs, but not always. It’s a good idea to cut down on your intake of fat, salt and sugar, not just to lose weight and lose man boobs, but because those foods are bad for your general health.
Most men do not have to embark on a stringent reduced calorie diet in addition to weight training in order to deal with man boobs. Simply eating sensibly and cutting out junk food while you build muscle and exercise regularly can have a dramatic effect. You should see noticeable results after six weeks of training, and after three months your results will be dramatic and everyone will notice.
Not only can you lose man boobs, you can regain your health and energy in the process. It’s easier than you might expect, and the results are well worth the effort required.
